So, I’ll be the first to admit that not only is my closet typically a disaster area, but I constantly have that “I have nothing to wear” moment, which is a little ridiculous considering the fact that I own a clothing store… I finally realized that it’s not what’s in my closet that’s not great, it’s my perception on the same old pieces I’ve had for forever. In preparation for dejaBLEU (Savannah’s designer consignment sale), I decided to give my closet a major overhaul. Here are my tips and tricks for loving your closet:
PURGE :: Go through each piece and think, “will I wear this in the next six months?” If the answer is no for any reason (such as season, size, or style), get it out of there (at least temporarily). This way you are only left with items you could see yourself wearing.
HIDE :: For items that you can’t bear to part with, hide them away in another closet or a box under your bed until next year when you can reevaluate. I was ecstatic to find a FAB gold tweed Trina Turk blazer hiding in my guest room closet that fits right in with the current trends of metallic AND blazers.
HANG :: Hang everything, including jeans and tees (make sure to purge the ones that you won’t wear). You can’t really see what you have if it’s in a big pile or stack. Plus, cotton tees get creases when folded, and, let’s face it, you are not going to iron them.
INVEST :: in nice, identical hangers. I found these great ones from Real Simple, and they make everything look more appealing. Also, if you drool over those amazing closets on Pinterest, this is a relatively inexpensive way to make what you’ve got look FAB.
FLIP :: Switch it up by rearranging the way you organize your closet. For example, face the hangers a different way or organize it by “casual” and “dressy.” The idea is to freshen up the way you perceive your closet - AND what’s in it.
SHOP :: When you’ve got your closet looking amazing, then you can determine what you need to fill in your wardrobe. Some staples I think every woman needs include: a chic blazer in navy or black, dark skinny jeans, a crisp white button down, cream wide leg pants, black skinny pants, something with sequins, a fun, bright pump, and neutral long cardigan to layer.
Hope these tips help you have a fabulous, fashionable New Year for 2012!
